The Wellcome Trust has been a significant investor in early stage life sciences companies since 1993.  The Trust has over $20 billion in assets and has a dedicated team focused on direct investments in life sciences.  It brings together a world class network of experts and  close ties to the leading health care investors around the world in every asset class, including venture capital, buyouts and hedge funds.

Examples of Recent Investments

Since 2001, The Wellcome Trust has invested in over 25 companies on a direct basis.  These investments capitalize on the Trust's unparalleled network of scientific experts and investment professionals with whom September Ventures has worked closely.  In 2003, The Trust invested in Aton Pharma, which was sold to Merck for an undisclosed sum.  In early discovery, selected investments include Chroma Therapeutics, Metabasis and Sirtris.

Since 2006, September Ventures has recommended investments on behalf of The Wellcome Trust on a larger scale, recognizing the Trust's interest in investing larger sums of capital in the health care sector.  The Trust invested over $10 million in each of 4 deals in 2006, including Cell Biosciences, Radius Pharmaceuticals, Sequoia Pharmaceuticals and the Series A and founding of Amplimmune, a spinout from Johns Hopkins focused on recent discoveries in cancer and immunology.
In specialised funds, September Ventures has made recommendations of long-only and hedge fund managers, as well as venture capital funds.  We seek to identify unique investment and co-investment opportunities which leverage The Trust's network and expertise.
